Stories of the Himalayas

Last week we celebrated the completion of our spring home school program Stories of the Himalayas.

The course is a seven week exploration of story telling traditions and techniques from the Himalayan region.

Each week includes an hour and a half of art making and a half hour tour featuring objects from our touch collection and stories from the diverse cultures of  the Himalayan region.

Through open-ended drawing, painting, print making, and sewing projects, the students each imagined and depicted their own setting, problem, main characters, and solutions which they sewed together to create story scrolls  inspired by Himalayan thankga paintings.

This year the group decided to create each of the elements on fabric and to sew the together the completed artworks so that they would be more similar to thangka paintings. They each came out beautifully and the students were very pleased with their work.
