Fall Family Day 2011: Fantastic Journeys!

Last Saturday, October 1st, Autumn was in the air as family and friends gathered at noon in the Education Center to kick off Fall Family Day: Fantastic Journeys! Over the next five hours, they moved from the Education Center into the Museum through a series of fun, family-friendly activity stations, building maps, playing dress-up, and trying spices-among other things. Throughout the day they completed an exciting scavenger hunt for a chance to win prizes.

One of the first stops was Collaborative Map-making led by the RMA Teen Guide Council. Families were encouraged to place a jewel on their homes and connect it to a special message about travel:

Once they had completed their map, they could find their way to the Workshop, where they made incense and clay beads to earn gold coins (which they could spend later at the Spice Market!).

With coins and beads in their pockets, they needed to try on some fancy new clothes at the Fabric Stall and Dress Up station.

Being in a new culture means, what else? A stop at the Souvenir Stall to pick up a gift for mom, grandpa, or Rover–but a surprise visit from a clown might be a distraction!

They finally made it over to the Spice Stall (set up like a real market) where families could spend the gold coins they earned back in the Workshop!

The second to last stop on the journey was with the Story Tours…

The beautiful Fall day also included The Open Ensemble Music Demonstration and Performance.

Don’t miss the next Family Day–it is sure to be an adventure!
