Assistive Listening Devices at the Rubin

Just the other day I had walked into work and found an interesting package on my desk.  The case seemed like something out of a James Bond movie, protecting a secret device that could change the world forever.

But while this was reality and this educator was not a secret agent, the device inside was something that could change the Rubin Museum of Art world for many who walk through our doors.  Desk and CaseWithin the case were our new Assistive Listening Devices known as ALDs.  ALD’s are used by visitors who suffer from hearing loss and are personal devices that transmit amplified sound to a visitor to hear a guide/docent/educator within the busy galleries of a museum.   Thanks to the good people at Acoustiguide, the Rubin Museum now can offer these great devices for all of our visitors.

For a visitor to use these devices they must first request at the front desk of the museum to use these devices.

Visitors will then receive a device called a Guide-U Receiver which can work with a person’s hearing aid or a standard set of head phones.

Guides/Docents/Educators of the museum will then sync (connect) a microphone or known as a Transmitter, to be used on the tour.

When the tour is over, the visitor returns the device to the front desk so it can be reused for all who enter the museum.

These ALD devices can be used at the Rubin Museum of Art on the following days*:

Monday: 11 a.m – 5 p.m.
Wednesday: 11 a.m – 7 p.m.
Thursday: 11 a.m – 5 p.m.
Friday: 11 a.m – 10 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 11 a.m – 6 p.m.

*Please note that all devices are used by subject to request and is limited to one per person.  No charge is required.
