The Rubin Museum of Art Welcomes Baruch Peer Mentors

Marcos Stafne leads a discussion with the SEEK Peer Mentors in the Education Center

The Education staff at the Rubin Museum of Art welcomed Betty DuVerger, SEEK Counselor, and a lively group of Baruch SEEK Peer Mentors to the museum for a training Seminar on September 22, 2011. The Seminar was designed to prepare eleven SEEK Mentors, most of whom are college Sophomores, to bring SEEK Freshmen student groups to the museum for gallery visits during the Fall 2011 semester.

Laura Lombard discusses materials and techniques in the galleries

A team of three Rubin Museum educators, Marcos Stafne, Head of Education & Visitor Experience, Ashley Mask, Manager of Visitor Experience, and Laura Lombard, Assistant Manager of University Programs & Partnerships, worked closely with the students, providing them with an orientation to the museum, a review of group visit protocol, and an introduction to the geographical region and sacred art of the Himalayas through a variety of interactive learning methods. These methods provide helpful tools for SEEK Mentors to create their own customized visits in the galleries.

Throughout the seminar, the SEEK students were curious, engaged, and worked beautifully as a team, illustrating the importance of the SEEK Program (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge), which provides educational opportunities to Baruch students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom have had inadequate academic preparation for college-level coursework.

Among the many upbeat events of the day, the SEEK Peer Mentors had the good fortune to meet Donald Rubin, CEO and Co-Founder the Rubin Museum, who gave them a warm Rubin Museum of Art welcome. As Mr. Rubin would agree, we all look forward to seeing lots of Baruch SEEK Peer Mentors and their student groups in our galleries this Fall!
