Spring 2010 Family Day: Expedition Cosmos!

Inspired by the Visions of the Cosmos exhibition, the Rubin Museum of Art explored the Universe in 2010 with a day of art, dance, music, film and more. Visitors heard stories about the cosmos from inside an inflated planetarium, partook in a dance performance inspired by the stars, watched a film about the universe, went on a scavenger hunt throughout the galleries and constructed a 3-D mobile.

Starlab Presentations Educators from NYSCI presented different stories from the cosmos (Hindu, African, Native American, and Greek) in a giant inflatable planetarium.  Visitors were given a map of the night sky to take home.

Dancing Under the Stars Dancers from Dance Theater of Nepal explored movement inspired by the stars and the elements in 20 minute interactive performances. Audiences completed the experience with an interactive dance party on stage!

Journey through the Universe Families watched the film about the exploration of the Universe designed by the American Museum of Natural History narrated by Guide, Harry Einhorn.  Children were invited onstage for a creative dramatics activity where they embodied the activities on the screen.

Story Telling Tours & Scavenger Hunt RMA Teens guided families on a story telling tour of the Himalayan Cosmos.

Cosmic Crafts Families made individual crafts throughout the museum that explored the cosmos and Himalayan culture. In the studio, families assembled all these crafts together to make a 3-d mobile.
