Interns 2011

Posted by Kayley Fullerton – Education Intern

Although many new faces have been seen around the Rubin Museum, Tuesday, October 11 introduced us to at least a few of the fresh crop of busy interns.

Coordinated by the museum’s Community Relations and Volunteer Programs Manager, Louise Brooks, the interns first told the others about themselves, which department they were interning with, and how they came to arrive at the museum. The group came from such diverse places as San Francisco and China and majored in a variety of fields including film studies and art history.

Louise showed a short, ten-minute documentary about the Rubin Museum’s founding, which proved quite interesting in helping the interns understand where the art comes from, how the building was converted from Barney’s department store to a museum of Himalayan art, and even how decisions are made by the staff (unconventionally!).

After the video, the interns were invited to take a tour with the Rubin’s Exhibition Designer, John Monaco. He talked about his roundabout break into exhibition design, starting with his graduate school sculpture studies, and his advice for breaking into any field–work somewhere that gives you the skills you need for the career you want. John has designed most of the museum’s extensive past exhibitions and is currently working on one which is sure to be just as exciting.

Great job, Louise, on kicking off the Fall 2011 intern season!
