Chelsea Dreams

While walking down 21st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues during my lunch break one afternoon, a magical, colorful world suddenly unfolded before my eyes. The magic began in front of these bright red doors:

Front Door of PS 11 in Chelsea

This is Public School 11, situated in the heart of Chelsea, serving Pre-K – 5 grade public school students. But don’t let the formal facade fool you. On either side of these stately steps, fantastic murals wrap a playful path around the entire front of the building. You’ll discover Broadway singers and dancers, as well as scientists and medical doctors…

You’ll step into an exotic animal alcove…

You’ll be enchanted by dancing mermaids…

Mermaids!

You’ll wonder what it might be like to ride on the back of a giraffe with an elephant cheering you on.

And as you explore these murals, you’ll find inspiring text composed by 5th graders to accompany their imaginative works of art:

“When we read and write, we dream. Our imaginations take us to places we remember, places we wish we could travel to, and places we will never be. When we read and write we become superheroes, sports stars, mermaids, angels, grown-ups, and crazy creatures.”

So, if you’re ready to slip into some colorful dream worlds, head to PS 11, also known as the William T. Harris School, located at 320 West 21st Street, between 8th & 9th Avenues in the heart of Chelsea.  And if you go, please, say hi to the girl riding the giraffe for me.
